Then & Now: SWV!!!

Influenced by gospel and classic rhythm & blues, R&B female trio Sisters With Voices, or SWV were introduced to the world in 1992 with their debut, It’s About Time.

New York City bred CHERYL “COKO” GAMBLE, LEANNE “LELEE” LYONS and TAMARA “TAJ” JOHNSON were three school friends with three big church influenced voices that learned how to harmonize in order to establish them as one of the most popular urban R&B groups of the ’90s.

With singles like “Right Here,” “I’m So Into You,” the trio was a commercial force by 1993, but the hits like, “Weak” and “Right Here/Human Nature,” still paints the picture of what is considered classic R&B.

The group experienced a plethora of hits, but unfortunately disbanded in 1998.

He Got Jokes: Affion Crockett!!!

Folks know AFFION CROCKETT as the Internet sensation whose dead-on impersonations of DRAKE and RUSSELL SIMMONS have garnered over 39 million YouTube views. But who is Affion really?

Juicy chats with the funny man to find out. - KWELI I. WRIGHT

On What Inspired Him…

When Def Comedy Jam was like a real hot commodity, that’s when I first saw hip-hop comedians that I could relate to, as opposed to EDDIE MURPHY… he was like a rock star to me. I was a fan, but I never thought I could do what he did.

How His Mama Helped His Career…

My mom is from Trinidad & Tobago, so I was always doing her accent, my aunt’s accent…that’s how I learned to do voices and characters. If I could make my mother laugh, then it was a wrap for everybody else.

On Being a Hip-Hop Junkie…

When you see me as CHRIS BROWN or DRAKE or rappin’ like JAY, I do all of that. I’m a rapper too, so I know how to write and do all that good stuff. I’m an East Coast head all day when it comes to hip-hop.

On NICK CANNON…

I’m happy for him. I’ve seen him grow literally since he was a teenager and just to see where he is now: the father, the mogul… I’m always proud of NICK.

Who’s the Funniest Female…

My perfect female comedic match? I don’t know. [Laughs.] I mean who’s a silly female that’s really funny… As far as a celebrity, I’d say TRACEY ULMAN, as far as a skill set. She’d be my match.

On His Impersonations..

Ninety percent of the guys [I’ve imitated] have complimented me from JAY-Z to RUSSELL SIMMONS. DRAKE loved it…for the most part they all reached out. CHRIS BROWN is a fan. He came and did my show… I make fans of these guys because I don’t try to disrespect them. I try to make a funny situation and keep it movin’.
