Miss Jessie’s Helps All the Curly Gurls!!!

Not to long ago, TITI and MIKO BRANCH of Miss Jessie’s haircare talked to Juicy about their mega-hit hair care line for curls, and why Miss Jessie’s isn’t your average haircare line.

Since MISS JESSIE’s has become a household name, whether you are Black, White, multi-ethnic girls, Asian, or Latina – controlling your curls  has become their mission.

Now the duo comes back to share even more curly hair care “gems” for curly hair care.

JUICY: How many types of “curls” are there – and is there a big difference in how you care for the hair?

TITO+MIKI: There are so many different types of curls.  Our standard categories are kinky, curly or wavy, but within those categories are many different textures and patterns.  In terms of differences in how you care for the hair, everyone needs a good shampoo and deep conditioner.  Where there may be a difference is in terms of which styling product is best for the individual hair type.

JUICY: What is the best way to shampoo/condition curly hair?

T+M: A detangling shampoo like Super Slip Sudsy or a non-sulfate shampoo like Crème de la Curl would be a good start.  Next, using a deep conditioner like our Super Sweetback or Rapid Recovery treatments will help seal in moisture.  While the hair has these rich conditioning products use a paddle brush to detangle the hair.

JUICY:Is there a different approach to coloring/highlighting curly hair than straight or chemically relaxed hair?

T+M: With curly hair you have to think about how circular textures pick up light.  Curly hair has more dimension and depth so the color and your approach should match that.

JUICY: Gals with long curly hair looking for a cut, what should you be mindful of when working with a hairstylist?

T+M: The best advice we can give is to find a professional stylist that has experience working with and cutting curly hair.  The stylist should be knowledgeable of the kind of curl you have.  The curly category has some nuances that the curly stylist should be able to handle.  They must also take into consideration how your curly hair behaves and your features so that the styling is complementary to you and your curly hair.

JUICY:  What are your tips for curly girls that have to deal with the dreaded “frizz monster” ?

T+M: To fight frizz use a product with sufficient hold factor.  Do not touch your hair while it is wet.  Also, if you use a towel to dry your hair don’t rub but pat the hair dry.  At night be sure to sleep with a satin bonnet and satin pillowcase so that you don’t create frizz while you sleep.  When hair comes in contact with natural fibers like cotton it rubs against the fabric there by creating frizz.  When hair comes in contact with satin it slips against the fabric.

JUICY: What trends do you see in terms of curly hair with celebs?

Titi+Miko: Having textural hair has been embraced in a new and exciting way, we see more and more celebrities either embracing their curly hair or sporting really interesting curly weaves and wigs.  You’ll see more texture on the streets, in commercials and on the fashion runways.  Although it is very gratifying to know that Miss Jessie’s has helped the everyday day embrace her curls, it is always awesome to see someone in the public eye share our vision.

The Queens of Curls: Meet Titi and Miko Branch

MISS JESSIE’‘s has become a household name of  hair products created in 2004 by sisters, TITI and MIKO BRANCH.

It was then that the pair decided create a line of products that would work for all curly hair types. Didn’t matter if you were Black, White, multi-ethnic girls, Asian, or Latina – controlling your curls became their mission.

Now seven years later Miss Jessie’s products have been used and liked by ALICIA KEYS, KERI HILSON, TANIKA RAY and HOLLY ROBINSON PEETE.

Titi and Miko share some of the keys to making curly hair look it’s best, curly hair trends – and why Miss Jessie’s isn’t your average haircare line.

JUICY: What make Miss Jessie’s stand out from the rest of curly hair products?

T+M: Our product line was created with the intent to address the many different challenges that all people with curly hair may deal with on a daily basis.  We have products that address frizz, shrinkage, extreme dryness, various degrees of hold, and curl definition.  Our brand is not only products on the shelf, but information driven with an effort to provide real solutions.  We are performance based driven and truly there to assist individuals with kinky, curly, wavy textures with real time, tried and true solutions.  We help to articulate trends going in-line with our mission and bolstered by our hands-on experience in the Miss Jessie’s salon.

JUICY: What has been the biggest challenge with expanding the Miss Jessie’s brand?

T+M: The biggest challenge is keeping product on the shelf!  Our products tend to sell out very quickly (particularly in Target).  Our other challenge is to keep our messaging clear.  There are many more product lines out now addressing curly textures in the market place now.  With that, it is important to us to continue to share our experience and expertise with the public in a clear way so that our customers always get the best out of our products and their experience with their curly hair.

JUICY: If someone can only get 1 of your products, which one would you suggest?  What are the best ways to use it?

T+M: If we only had to pick one it would be the Super Sweetback Deep Conditioner.  It has  dual purpose and can be used as a deep treatment or as a leave in before applying most styling products with hold factor. We also chose Super Sweetback Treatment because it works so well and mostly all curls, kinks and waves. This conditioning treatment should be applied after you wash out your shampoo.  Apply the treatment to your hair, detangle with your fingers and then use a paddle brush, put on a plastic cap for 20 minutes, and then rinse.  Using heat will intensify the treatment.

JUICY: What are some of your upcoming projects or product launches we should look out for? T+M: We are continuing to work on many aspects of the business. We will be launching new products in 2012 and are thinking of best ways to spread the Miss Jessie’s word. The best way for everyone to stay informed of what’s coming is to become a fan of our Facebook page. We are very active on our page and work to create a platform where everyone can share.
