In an attempt to seek refuge from the many dangers of his south side Chicago neighborhood, DONELL JONES began pursuing music at an early age. Equipped with a passion for singing and songwriting, JONES joined a local R&B group and landed a record deal with LA REID‘s LaFace records in 1993.
Shortly after signing a recording contract, JONES’ group disbanded but he remained in good graces with LaFace records. JONES began to hone his skills as a songwriter and producer and scored a huge hit with, “Think Of You,” the debut single for an up-and-coming singer named USHER.
After striking gold with singles written for 702, SILK, BROWNSTONE and MADONNA, in 1996 DONELL JONES released his debut album, My Heart .
While JONES quickly gained a loyal following with his debut album, it wasn’t until the release of his followup album, Where I Wanna Be, that JONES received groundbreaking success.
In 1999, JONES spawned two hits with singles, “Where I Wanna Be,” and “U Know What’s Up,” featuring LISA LEFT EYE LOPES. With both singles debuting at number two, Where I Wanna Be became JONES’ first platinum selling album.
In 2000, JONES went on to release the single, “I’ll Go,” on the Love & Basketball soundtrack and “Do What I Gotta Do,” on the Shaft soundtrack. JONES’ success continued to flourish as his follow up album Life Goes On, debuted at number 2 on the R&B charts and soon went gold upon its 2002 release.
Despite his large following and wide success in the music industry, JONES decided to take a four year musical hiatus. However when he did come back to release Journey Of A Gemini debuted at number one on the R&B charts, like he had never left.
After a 14-year relationship, JONES parted ways with LaFace in 2007 and launched CandyMan Music label in 2010. The singer/songer writer debuted his first album on the new label, Lyrics in 2010 and came in at number 9 on the R&B charts.
JONES, who has found a way to become a chart topping recording artist while maintaining an extraordinarily high level of privacy, is gearing up to release his sixth studio album, Forever on July 9th.
