NICKI MINAJ is no longer the only female rapper making a name for herself in the male dominated hip hop game.
Harlem newcomer AZEALIA BANKS is just as ready to reach high levels of success, her hit “212″ was named in Pitchfork’s top ten tracks of 2011, and is one of the only few people rapper KANYE WEST follows on Twitter.
BANKS, who made news recently due to her beef with rapper T.I, spoke with VIBE magazine about her thoughts on NICKI MINAJ.
“Nicki Minaj has really mastered the art of popular songwriting.I think she’s a brilliant lyricist, but I think a lot of the things she started doing with her look were distracting. I think she’s talented enough to sustain a very fruitful career without the ugly wigs and ugly costumes,” BANKS candidly admits.
BANKS who has also admitted to New York Times she’s a bisexual says she would be open to work with MINAJ, primarily because she’s “mad sexy.”
However when asked how she feels about NICKI opening the door for other female artists, BANKS honestly replied, “I don’t think the door was ever closed for urban female artists. There has always been a female killing it.”
She says homage needs to be paid to rappers like EVE, REMY MA, LIL MAMA, and SANTIGOLD, before continuing, “I don’t think Nicki necessarily opened the door for anyone else but herself… I don’t think any of the current female rappers’ success’ are contingent upon anything Nicki Minaj did. It’s contingent upon our talents and creativity.”
