Hair Trauma: How To Cleanse Your Scalp While Wearing Extensions!!!

Q: Dear Hair Trauma, I just started wearing weaves and I like them, but not being able to scratch or cleanse my scalp regularly is a problem. Are there any products that you can recommend besides me washing my hair every 2 weeks?

A: Say no more! Juicy has a few promising products that will help ease this common problem for all weave wearers.

When adorning a weave, most hair professionals do recommend shampooing your hair and scalp at least every 2 weeks. However depending on your hair needs and daily lifestyle, you may need to cleanse more frequently. In this case, we recommend skipping the water and sud routine and opt for a dry shampoo instead.

Try OSCAR BLANDI PRONTO DRY SHAMPOO POWDER, 2.5oz, $21, available at Ulta Beauty or Sephora. Made with tea tree oil, natural rice, and oat & tapioca Starches this dry shampoo absorbs oil, dirt, and product build-up to effectively cleanse the hair and scalp. Not to mention the bottle also has a pointed cap, which fits perfectly in-between wefts and hard to reach braid patterns.

Another great way to cleanse…

Hair Trauma: Maintaining Hair Moisture!!

Q:Dear Hair Trauma, How do I maintain moisture in my hair?

A: It’s actually normal for natural hair to feel dry.

Your hair’s behavior at low or high levels of moisture is very predictable. You cannot change it, but you can work with it by understanding that things like weather contribute to change in texture of your hair. The level of moisture in your hair is dependent on how dry or wet the air is (humidity).

Although it is possible to live with dry hair, it is critical to have moisturized hair when you are manipulating the hair physically. For example: When undoing a braided/twisted style, when combing or detangling hair, or when manipulating the hair in different styles. Relaxed or natural, dry hair is prone to breakage which can create other hair problems if it ever becomes susceptible to it.

Substances that retain and help absorb moisture are called humectants. Honey and vegetable glycerin are natural humectants and have been used widely to aid in sealing in moisture in your hair. When using humectants, it is important to use them in temperatures with warmer temperatures, because in colder months they can steal moisture from your hair, making it drier. .

Misting your tresses with water is also usually helpful, or using products like Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie,$20 HSN.com, to give your dry, stressed hair the moisture it craves.

Hair Trauma: 8 Heat-Free Hairstyles For Natural Hair!!!

Q: DEAR HAIR TRAUMA, I’VE BEEN STRAIGHTENING OUT MY NON-RELAXED SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS, AND NOW THAT NATURAL HAIR IS ‘IN’ I WANT TO TRY CURLY STYLES. I’VE TRIED LOOKING ON NATURAL SITES BUT GET OVERWHELMED, ARE THERE ANY BASIC STYLES YOU RECOMMEND?

A: With the recent popularity of natural hair styles and transitioning, you would think seeking a style that fits would be effectively filtered and way less overwhelming.

The information is endless, but for someone who has straightened their natural curl texture with thermal heat for the last 5 years, the one thing to remember is to continue to  stay relaxer free.

You will also need to give your hair a break from constant heat from time to time by implementing protective styles, styles that help prevent your hair from excessive heat damage.

Curly and kinky hair textures have various bonds in them that, when altered by chemicals or thermal heating, can cause irreversible damage (straight ends) and breakage.

Curly hair requires very different styling regimens and products than natural kinky hair or other natural textures.

Juicy has chosen 8 thermal free natural styles with step-by-step tutorials, that we’re confident you can achieve with ease:

Step-By-Step: Tuxedo Nails!!!

Because of the high temps in the summer, most Juicy girls want to be cool and comfortable so they opt for looks that are more relaxed.

Extreme heat doesn’t have to be an excuse to be completely underdressed. Use tuxedo nails to turn your regular summertime look into a look befitting of a black tie affair!

If you’re ready to add a semi-formal touch to your everyday look, follow this Step-By-Step guide on how to create tuxedo nails.

Things You Will Need

*Base coat, white nail polish, black nail polish, a dotting tool (a nail art stripper or  toothpick will suffice), nail polish remover, cotton balls, and top coat

 Step 1

Starting with nails that are clean and polish free, place a layer of base coat on your nails.

Step 2

After the base coat has dried, paint the entire nail using white polish.

Step 3

Use  black polish and your dotting tool to create four dots in the shape of a rectangle then place one dot in the middle.

Step 4

Draw a line from each dot to the dot in the middle, then connect remaining dots, forming a bow tie.

Step 5

Using black polish paint the inside of the bow tie.

Step 6

After the bow tie is complete, use black nail polish to draw a line similar to that of a french manicure on the top of your nail.

Step 7

Place three dots that go from the middle of the bow tie to the french manicured line.

Step 8

After all of the nail polish has dried, add an additional layer of top coat to prevent chipping.

It may take several attempts to perfect the tuxedo nail but with practice and patience your nails will be dressed to impress in no time!

Step-by-Step: Achieving The ‘Au Natural’ Makeup Look!!!

Known for her dramatic makeup looks, rumor has it that KANYE WEST‘s actually prefers his  girlfriend KIM KARDASHIAN  toned all the way down.

WEST like many fellas find makeup looks that result in  a more natural appearance more attractive.

Now if giving a more au natural look is something you are going for, know that there is no magic formula to clean appearance.

Wearing makeup while maintaining a natural appearance is actually quite easy and  you can still enhance your features without wearing makeup that is way too obvious and overdone.

Check out Juicy‘s four tips for getting the natural look!

Step 1. Use foundation that correctly matches your skin tone.  Don’t use heavy bronzers or cream. Still apply your moisturizers, cover up, or any other product that improves your skin.

Step 2. Find eye shadows slightly darker or lighter than your skin tone. Beige, brown, taupe, light pink, and neutral tones are best to try.  If using more than one shade make sure that you carefully blend. Shades that are too dark or too bright won’t produce that natural appearance.

Step 3. A few strokes of mascara is perfectly fine, but for a more subtle look don’t use eyeliner. You also may want to opt to not use your false lashes when trying to obtain a natural look.

Step 4. Natural doesn’t mean skipping lip color – it is highly encouraged. However, you should use sheer, nude, or light shades. Lip glosses and tinted lip balm usually works better to avoid bold and bright colors.

Step-By-Step: 3 Ways To Tie The Urban Turban!!!

Thanks to celebrity stylists JUNE AMBROSE turban head wraps also known as the “Urban Turban” will be everything this summer.

The haute hair trend has been dubbed as June’s signature look, but everyone from natural beauty SOLANGE to model mogul IMAN has been spotted adoring their own unique versions of the laid back look.

Which is very easy to do considering the endless fabric, print, and color options there is to choose from, along with the numerous ways in which you can tie your head wrap.

Check out our Step-By-Step guide as Juicy show’s you three different ways to tie your Urban Turban this summer:

Things You Need

Large Scarf (or large fabric), $10, hm.com

Signature Look

Step 1: Pull two diagonal ends of your scarf together to form a triangle (you should have 3 ends.)

Step 2: Place the scarf over the nape of your head so that one end drapes over your face, and the other two ends are arms length.

Step 3: Pull the two arms length ends to the middle of your forehead and tie together, leaving the third piece still draped under. Make sure you have a tight and secure knot (but not too tight).

Step 4: Pull the third piece back from your face and tie the other two pieces together on top of that piece.

Step 5: Then tie the two pieces together again.

Step 6: With the remaining fabric ends, tuck them back into the original knot, making sure it’s securely tucked.  BOOM! Welcome to  Juniverse!

The Laid Back Look

Step 1: Repeat steps 1-3 from The Signature Look.

Step 2: Twist all 3 ends together and then create a tight bun.

Step 3: Tuck the loose ends securely underneath the bun.

Step 4: Once secured tightly play with your bun to make it as big or small as you want, but take it from us, the bigger the better!

The Au Natural Look

Step 1: Repeat steps 1-3 from the previous looks.

Step 2: Take the draped piece from your face and tuck underneath the knot of the other two ends (the piece should no longer be visible before moving on to the next step).

Step 3: Keep pulling the remaining two ends tightly to create the shape you desire.

Step 4: Now pull the two ends to the back of your head, tie a knot, and bring the remaining fabric to the front, tucking them into the sides of the turban so no fabric is showing. And voila!

Remember make each style your own by adding your own spin on the trend. Nothing is off limits!
