Then & Now: Cherish!!!

The R&B quartet known as CHERISH knew from an early age that they’d be involved in the music industry. As children FARRAH, NEOSHA and twins FELISHA and FALLON KING relocated from Illinois to Atlanta under the direction of their father, who often toured with EARTH, WIND AND FIRE, in an attempt to jump start their careers.

The four sisters caught their big break when they were asked to appear on DA BRAT‘s 2003 single, “In Luv Wit Chu, ” which eventually hit number nine on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40. With the success of their first collaboration, CHERISH signed a recording contract with Warner Brother’s Reprise Records….

Then & Now: B5!!!

Hailing St. Petersburg, Florida, the all male singing group B5, have went through their fair share of rough patches, label moves and name changes but they are back and sound like they’ve never left.

In 1998, four brothers, DUSTIN, KELLY, PATRICK and DARNELL BREEDING began singing under the moniker TNT BOYZ throughout Florida. After participating in local singing competitions and creating a buzz for themselves and the addition of their youngest brother BRYAN to the group, the TNT BOYZ changed their name to B5.

The band of brothers eventually went to win a singing competition hosted by Radio Disney, giving them the rare opportunity to open up for superstars like KANYE WEST, GINUWINE, USHER, BOW WOW, FANTASIA and many others from the late 1990′s through the early 2000′s…

Then & Now: Lyfe Jennings!!!

Known for delivering socially conscious and uplifting hit after hit, LYFE JENNINGS, became a breath of fresh air to R&B music when he stepped onto the scene in 2004. Since then, the guitar baring crooner has gone on a rags to riches tale that shares just as many high’s as they do low’s.

Growing up in Toledo, Ohio, JENNINGS noticed he had a knack for singing and joined several of his family members in a music group entitled, THE DOTSONS. After a slow start, JENNINGS inevitably left the music group and turned to a life of crime.

At the tender age of 14, JENNINGS was sentenced to 10 years in prison for arson. While completing his prison term, the aspiring singer found inspiration in the evolving R&B music scene and learned how to play the guitar and write songs, two things that would tremendously help him out upon his release from prison…

Then & Now: Mark Curry!!!

51-year-old comedian, MARK CURRY, has bringing the laughs since the late 1980′s. From stand up shows to leading roles on television sitcoms to hosting radio and television shows, MARK CURRY has left a mark on the comedy world.

CURRY’s road to stardom began in 1987, after the Oakland native started performing stand up comedy shows throughout the LA comedy circuit. The up-and-coming comedian landed his big screen debut in the 1991 film, Talkin’ Dirty After Dark.

After a successful stint in the film, CURRY received a leading role in the television sitcom, Hanging With Mr. Cooper. For five seasons, CURRY had the pleasure of playing ‘Marcus Cooper,’ an NBA player from Oakland turned substitute teacher, along with actress HOLLY ROBINSON PEETE.

CURRY took a little break from acting after Hanging With Mr. Cooper went off the air in 1997, but returned with a reoccurring role as DREW CAREY‘s boss on the sitcom, The Drew Carey show in 2000…

Then & Now: Nivea!!!

Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, 18-year-old R&B singer NIVEA, made her big debut she appeared on MYSTIKAL‘s smash hit, “Danger,” in 2000.

After garnering success from her cameo, NIVEA went on to release two singles, “Don’t Mess With the Radio,” and “Don’t Mess With My Man,” off of her self-titled debut album, released in 2002.

In the midst of her fame, NIVEA found love with LIL WAYNE, got engaged, ended the engagement, and shortly after tied the knot with up-and-coming music producer, TERIUS THE DREAM NASH, in 2004.

After tying the knot, NIVEA debuted the first single from her follow up album, Complicated, entitled “Okay,” featuring LIL JON and YOUNG BLOODZ. However, in the midst of promoting her sophomore album, NIVEA gave birth to her first child, NAVY NASH, causing her label to scale back album promotion….

Then & Now: Craig David!!!

UK singing sensation, CRAIG DAVID, stepped on to the music scene in 1999 with his debut single, “Fill Me In.”

DAVID’s debut album, Born To Do It, released in the US in July 2001 and has since went on to sell over 7 million copies, and Slicker Than Your Average, DAVID’s follow up album, has sold over 3 million copies since its 2002 release.

DAVID’s album, The Story Goes…, released in the UK in 2005, and in the United States in 2007,only was well received in the UK. That followed by lack luster American sales and record label changes impacted DAVID’s fourth and fifth projects, Trust Me and Signed Sealed Delivered resulting in a brief musical hiatus…

Then & Now: Brownstone!!!

During the early 1990′s three up-and-coming singers, MONICA ‘MIMI’ DOBY, NICHOLE ‘NICCI’ GILBERT and CHARMAINE ‘MAXEE’ MAXWELL, formed the R&B girl group BROWNSTONE in Los Angeles, CA.

After being signed to legendary singer, MICHAEL JACKSON‘s MJJ Music Label , the trio released their debut album, From The Bottom Up in 1995.

The success of their first album, due in large part to their single, “If You Love Me,” led to BROWNSTONE receiving a Grammy nod in 1995 and winning a 1995 Billboard music award.

Tension soon began to develop between the three members and DOLBY ultimate cut ties with the group, initially blaming her departure on an illness.

BROWNSTONE released their sophomore album, Still Climbing in 1997, with newly added member, KINA COSPER, but failed to live up to the success of their debut…

Then & Now: Rich Boy!!!

Alabama rapper, RICH BOY, lit the rap industry on fire with his 2007 smash hit, “Throw Some D’s.”

The single propelled RICH BOY’s self titled debut album to number three on the Billboard Top 200 and number one on the rap charts resulting in “Throw Some D’s,” being named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Best Songs of 2007.

After the wide reception of his debut, RICH BOY, went on to release several mixtapes that failed to live up to his first album.

RICH BOY is set to make his return to music with his follow up album entitled, Break The Pot.

Featuring cameo’s from MAINO, and BOBBY V, RICH BOY’s upcoming album, Break The Pot, hits stores on April 9th.

What happened to KHIA?

Florida based rapper, KHIA, got her big break in the music industry in 2002 with the release of her debut album, Thug Misses. Her single “My Neck, My Back,” off the debut album, caused quite a controversy for the overtly sexual lyrics and references.

After lack luster album sales, KHIA became known for her over-the-top Twitter beefs with celebs like LIL KIM, TRINA, and DIAMOND more than her music.

After a brief appearance on VH1′s Miss Rap Supreme, KHIA went on to release several mixtapes and albums, but none have yet to live up to the critical acclaim of “My Neck, My Back.”
